Playhouse Makeover DIY

Playhouse Makeover DIY

I always get a ton of questions on this project so I decided to finally put together this blog post. This was honestly really simple and if I were to do it again, would probably take me half the time just because I was really winging it.

I got this Step2 playhouse on facebook marketplace for $50. My husband was *less than thrilled* when I decided to bring yet another giant toy home for my kids, but I think even he was impressed with the outcome. I linked everything I used from Amazon throughout the post.

First I made sure to clean it really well. I just used regular spray disinfectant/cleaner and a hose but you could definitely use some sort of special pre-paint cleaner from home depot if you’re feeling crazy. Probably not necessary though, tbh. Then I disassembled it. All I did was take off the accessories and roof with a drill and spread it all out to let it dry. The shutters wouldn’t come off so I just did my best to tape around them when I painted. Also, make sure it dries all the way before you start painting. Don’t get hasty. Trust me.

The most important part, I think, was the priming. I used the Rustoleum 2x primer and it covered pretty well and does adhere to plastic. It dried fast and I was able to move onto the next step quickly. My mistake here was not getting enough, and having to go back to the store mid-project, so definitely get at least like 4 cans of this. It’s cheap. Just buy more.

Next was the paint. Linked it here. No instructions necessary, just sprayed it on.

When it dries, cover it with this clear enamel to protect it from the elements/peeling/etc.

Once it’s dry, put it all back together and add the lights. These solar lights are the things that people ask about most. They were super cheap on Amazon and work so well, and also make the house look complete in my opinion.

Then, go nuts with your decor. I just added greenery, a welcome mat, and a few things inside. I personally love decorating it for the holidays, which my kids could absolutely car less about, but it brings me joy.

(Note: I drilled a few extra holes into the windowsil area to be able to stick these faux plants in.)

Here’s the Halloween update. Everything here is from the Target dollar spot.

Have fun and tag me on insta in your completed projects! Would love to see them 🙂
